I was born
Michelle Teri Robin Douthit on August 28, 1966 in Winston-Salem North Carolina. At the
tender age of 10 months, my mother Joan and I moved to New York City. Raised in the
church, I started singing at 4 years old and joined my first singing group at 5 years old.
They were called "The Mission of Love". I can remember holding the microphone
and thinking wow, this is fun. I was not nervous to say the least. Although I preferred to
sing in front of strangers instead of family and friends. My Aunt Theresa who was my
primary caretaker really was the first to notice my talents. She enrolled me in everything
possible. It wasn't only about singing and dancing. Her goal was to make sure I was well
rounded.
I joined a Gymnastic exhibition team. This group toured the U.S. The highlight was our
performance in Washington D.C. for former President Jimmy Carter. I was only 11 years old.
I was involved in one of the largest black organizations in the world, "The National
Council of Negro Woman". When I was 13 years old, I was the president of the junior
division. I was a sub-debutant and debutant.
In 1980, I attended the famous New York school of which a movie was written in it's honor,
Fame. I was a modern dance major at The High School of Performing Arts. During this period
I was chosen to be a part of the movie "Ghostbusters" and the commercial "I
Love New York" with the renowned ballet dancer Barisnikoff. After graduation 1984, I
decided to step away from the arts for a moment. I went into medicine. I became a medical
assistant secretary and worked at New York Presbyterian Medical Center. I worked in the
department of Urology along side a wonderful nurse Marie Fatal RN, BSN and she made me
editor in chief of her newsletter for the Nurses division of The Urology Association.
After 7 years of broadening my spectrum. I decided to go back to my first love, the arts.
I had auditioned for an off Broadway musical called "Mama, I Want to Sing". I
actually auditioned 7 years prior, but wasn't ready to commit. After careful deliberation
with my husband Donald and my sister Marjorie, they convinced me that it was my destiny to
go on the road. This would be my first introduction to life abroad. Therefore, in 1992 I
became a world traveller. I was on the road with "Mama" for 3 months. My next
venture would be in Germany with "The Golden Gospel Singers". This relationship
would go on for 2 years.
However, 1994 was a turning point in my life and career. (Click
